Two Days. Two Campuses. One Commitment to Housing Justice
This year’s Housing Justice Summit is a two-day event in Newark, New Jersey hosted by Seton Hall Law School and Rutgers Law School. Attendees may choose to attend one or both days—both are free and open to the public.

Friday, October 16, hosted at Seton Hall Law School, will include sessions, panels, and discussions examining, challenging, and reimagining legal rights and protections for tenants in New Jersey. For any attorneys attending, Continuing Legal Education credits will be offered.

Saturday, October 17, hosted at Rutgers Law School in Newark, will be a tenant organizing workshop. This interactive workshop is open to the community and does not have a legal education focus. The workshops are designed to teach skills and tactics to organize tenant associations within buildings and to win local housing justice campaigns. The sessions will be interactive workshops rather than panels and encourage participation.

Although this event is free and open to the public, depending on demand, we may reach a limit for attendance for the Saturday portion so everyone can meaningfully participate in the workshops. Priority will be given to tenants who wish to organize, although everyone, including attorneys, law students, and anyone looking to support tenant organizing, is encouraged to apply. Participants are asked to commit to attending for the full day.

Williams State Constitutional Law Lecture, hosted by the Rutgers Center for State Constitutional Studies. The keynote speakers are the co-directors of the ACLU State Supreme Court Initiative.

State courts are increasingly doing more than interpreting their constitutions independently. Matthew Segal will discuss "civic judicial federalism" exploring how state judges are assuming broader civic leadership roles to defend the rule of law, while navigating the tensions such public engagement can create for judicial neutrality and independence.

As debates over equality evolve, Murray suggests state courts should be in greater substantive conversation with federal courts. Julie Murray will discuss how state constitutional equality guarantees can inform conversations with federal courts about the meaning of equal protection.

In this talk, historian Sonia C. Gomez will explore how marriage shaped immigration patterns for the Japanese in America. During the period of racial exclusion (1908–1952), intimacy created limited pathways of admission for Japanese women. Permitted to enter the U.S. as wives, their inclusion served broader American interests in the Pacific, setting a precedent for later immigration legislation that privileged spouses and fiancés. This presentation will shed light on the intersection between intimacy, immigration, and U.S. imperialism in the Pacific.

Eligibility

The symposium is open to third-year Rutgers Law students (3Ls) and graduate students enrolled at Rutgers University.

Submission Requirements

Papers must be original works of scholarship on a topic related to immigration or citizenship law. Papers must not have been previously published; however, papers that have been accepted for publication but have not yet been published are eligible.

Submissions should be 40–60 pages, double-spaced, in 12-point font, and formatted with footnotes. Bluebook citation is preferred, but Chicago Manual style is also permitted.

Please include a separate cover page containing your name, Rutgers University department/school, campus, and expected graduation date. The paper itself should contain no identifying information to allow for anonymous review.

By submitting, authors certify that the paper is their own original work. Use of AI tools is limited to permissible editorial assistance, such as grammar or spell checking, and may not extend to substantive research, analysis, or drafting.

Four papers will be selected. Each selected author will receive:

The attorney will be guided from the initial client interview, through the drafting of the various estate planning documents and to their execution. Tax aspects of estate planning will also be discussed, including New Jersey inheritance taxes, and U.S. generation-skipping, gift and estate taxes. While the general focus will be on New Jersey law, many of the fundamentals discussed will apply to many other jurisdictions. Questions will be allowed at any time during the seminar. Sample forms will be provided.

Although municipal courts are considered courts of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for motor vehicle and parking tickets, minor criminal-type offenses, municipal ordinance offenses, and other offenses that occur within the boundaries of its municipality, many serious criminal cases, such as robbery, auto theft, or assault, start out as complaints filed in municipal courts. Attorneys will learn about municipal court operations and procedures, common cases, and how to prepare for appearances and trials in municipal court.

The 2027 Reunions are shaping up to be a fantastic day-long series of events that will provide the opportunity to renew relationships and to get an inside view of the current law school.

Afternoon Activities

• Noon. We will begin with a luncheon in the law school, during which Dean Johanna Bond, the first dean to preside over Newark and Camden, will provide an overview of the “state of the law school” talk. Also, a panel of students will speak about their current experience in law school.

• 2 PM. A CLE given by Professor Rachel Godsil that will satisfy the NJ and NY required credits (2 credit hours)

• 4 PM. Tour of the library. Some may then choose a local walking tour including the superbly renovated Hahne’s department store building.

Evening Activities

• 5:30 PM. We will enjoy cocktails at the former law school building, now known as “Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hall,” at 15 Washington Street

• 7 PM. Dinner with your classmates
